St George’s Square reaches the finals of a national award
The new St George’s Square, improved under the previous Liberal Democrat administration, has reached the finals of the national Town Centre Environment Awards.
St George’s Square is one of just six projects short-listed from more than 20 nominations from all over the country for this prestigious award that aims to highlight excellent work going on across the UK to improve the appeal of town centres.
The Liberal Democrats intended the £2.4m redevelopment of St George’s square to be the first major step in the regeneration of Luton’s town centre and the beginning of a wide-ranging programme of improvements to change the face of the area.
Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the Council, Cllr David Franks, said “It is great news that our insistence on quality when redeveloping the Square has been recognised in this way. I wonder whether the Labour leader of the Council will still say that she prefers the tatty old Square?”
