Post Offices to close thanks to MP Moran
The Post Office has announced the following post offices in Luton are to close; Hightown Road, Biscot Road, Trinity Road, Atherstone Road, Seymour Road, Slip End, and Chalton.
“Ms Moran has let down people in Luton by voting to allow these Post Offices to close,” said Liberal Democrat Luton South Parliamentary spokesman Councillor Qurban Hussain.
“She had her opportunity for her to make a stand on behalf of Luton residents. I am disappointed she has backed the Government rather than local people.”
The government aims to close a fifth of the Post Office branches nationwide and opposition MPs tried to stop the closure programme by proposing a motion in the House of Commons demanding the Government halt their plans to make 2,500 branches shut up shop.
But enough Labour MPs rallied around the Government’s closure plans to reject the motion and ensure the closure programme can continue unhindered. One of those voting to close post offices was Luton South MP Margaret Moran.
Furious local Liberal Democrat campaigners are calling on Ms Moran to explain why she voted to close post offices.
“The loss of post offices will hit communities hard in Luton,” said Qurban Hussain. “They are vital assets for many local people and closing them will cause many difficulties for older people and others with mobility problems, in particular.”
“Despite the decision of Ms Moran to help the Government press ahead with closure, Liberal Democrats are continuing to fight the demolition of the post office network.”
