Gritter teams need more support from Labour Councillors says Qurban Hussain

Luton’s gritting teams hard work appreciated, but could do better with more support from ruling Councillors.

“Many pavements were left seriously dangerous, some bus routes and important local link roads were not gritted at all. We have to ask whether five gritting lorries are really enough. It isn’t fair that hard working Council staff get the blame when the fault actually lies with Labour Councillors who will not put enough resources behind the snow clearing operations.”

Following a blizzard of phone calls and e’mails from constituents, Liberal Democrat Luton South Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Qurban Hussain has launched a campaign to get more resources behind the Council’s snow clearing teams. He is starting this off with a motion tabled for debate at the next meeting of the full Council on Tuesday evening 19th January.

“All of my Liberal Democrat colleagues have been contacted by their constituents and whilst there have been a few compliments most of the calls and e’mails have been about the Council’s inadequate response to the bad weather,” said Councillor Qurban Hussain. “We only ever need to get a small covering of snow and the whole town grinds to a halt.”

“This time, as usual, the heavy snow falls were predicted days ahead. Yet many pavements were left seriously dangerous, some bus routes and important local link roads were not gritted at all. We have to ask whether five gritting lorries are really enough. It isn’t fair that hard working Council staff get the blame when the fault actually lies with Labour Councillors who will not put enough resources behind the snow clearing operations.”
